About this event
FOUR YEARS of #egyptmeatstexas! We’re throwing a birthday bash, and you’re invited! Thursday, October 29 | 5–9 PM Backgammon tournament with @atxbackgammonclub Bellydancing by KG BBQ’s resident dancer @cheyneyteagandance Live music by @caravanstrange | 8–9 PM Food & drink specials all evening! Four years of good food, good people, and bringing a little Egypt to Texas. Come celebrate with us!
Who's playing
Caravan Strange is an Austin band assembled by Cairo-raised guitarist Moe Diab. They mix Arabic melodies, African rhythms, psychedelic sounds and funk, and they sing in more than one language. The ATX Backgammon Club runs the tournament, and KG BBQ's resident dancer, Cheyney Teagan, performs the bellydancing.
What to expect
The party runs through the evening. It combines a backgammon tournament, bellydancing and a closing hour of live music, with food and drink specials throughout. The menu is the draw: pomegranate-glazed pork ribs, brisket shawarma pitas, smoked lamb shoulder with sumac and cinnamon, and cardamom-pistachio rice pudding. KG BBQ sits next to Oddwood Brewing, so it is an easygoing, casual setting.
Why go
KG BBQ is the work of Kareem El-Ghayesh, who left a finance career in Cairo to learn Texas barbecue in Austin. Four years in, the place has earned a spot in Texas Monthly and the Michelin Guide. A birthday with Egyptian games, dance and music suits that story, and the crowd is likely to be regulars.
