Who's playing
The lineup includes Koko Mosaico, a studio from Ravenna, Italy, with Arianna Gallo and Anita Pilotti teaching. Brazil's Jeff Barros and Puerto Rico's CELSO are also on the bill. Austin artists are part of it too, among them James Talbot of Casa Neverlandia and the Workshop's own team. Several of the visiting artists are also painting murals during the week.
What to expect
Daily open studio hours let you walk in, pick out tile and make a mosaic, with every piece going home with a free grout kit. Around that, the week fills up with demos, artist presentations, specialty workshops and hands-on collaborative art. Some events take place at other spots around East Austin. The studio is a working, welcoming space, and all ages and experience levels are invited.
Why go
You can watch mosaic artists from several countries work, then try the craft yourself in the same room. The Mosaic Workshop also builds community murals around town, so the fest shows how that public art gets made. It is a good fit for families and curious beginners. Supported in part by an Elevate Grant from Austin's Arts, Culture, Music and Entertainment program, it is a local project with an international guest list.
