Casper Rawls

Thursday, November 5 at The Continental Club, Austin

The Continental Club No cover! 21+ only.

About this event

Expect anything from an all-acoustic show to an electric romp through blazing instrumentals. Casper is a musician’s musician. And for Casper it’s more than just being onstage. It’s sharing his love of music with other musicians – and his audience of friends. It’s stepping in front to erupt into a classic yet unpredictable Casper solo and stepping back to allow others their moment to shine. And often it’s stepping to the side and trading licks with a fiery energy or a relaxing ease with the special guests he’s gathered for you.

Who's playing

Rick "Casper" Rawls grew up in Helotes and has lived in Austin's music scene since the early 1970s. He spent 11 years with Toni Price, six alongside Doyle Bramhall Sr., and more than 25 with the LeRoi Brothers. He plays acoustic and electric guitar, including a white Telecaster with a B-Bender that makes it sound like a steel guitar. He has also hosted an annual Buck Owens birthday party at the Continental for about 25 years.

What to expect

The format is loose. Casper takes a solo, steps back to let others shine, and trades licks with the special guests he has gathered for the night. Those guests change from week to week, and the sound moves between quiet acoustic sets and louder instrumental playing. It is an early-evening show, and it feels more like friends playing together than a formal concert.

Why go

The Continental Club has been on South Congress since 1955. It has restored 1950s murals, a neon sign out front, and a long history of roots, blues and rockabilly. A weekly set from a guitarist who has played with so many Austin names is a good way to hear a local player in a historic room.
