About this event
The Heavy Heavy @10pm, Barfield @12am - $30+ Eventbrite tickets. $35 cash DOS admissions may be available according to capacity. Doors open @9pm. 21+ only. With the arrival of their debut EP Life and Life Only, The Heavy Heavy immediately filled a longtime void in the musical landscape, delivering a soulful breed of rock & roll untouched by modern artifice. As audiences across the globe grew enchanted with their era-bending sound, the UK-based band began selling out headline shows in major cities like New York and Chicago, opening for the likes of Black Pumas and Band of Horses, and earning critical comparisons to Jefferson Airplane, The Band, The Mamas & The Papas, and more - all with only a handful of songs to their name, including the AAA radio top five singles “Miles and Miles” and “Go Down River.” After spending the past two years on the road and in the studio, The Heavy Heavy now draw listeners even deeper into their dreamworld with their long-awaited debut album One Of A Kind. Because of the rapturous response to their debut EP, The Heavy Heavy found themselves in an unfamiliar headspace when it came to the creation of One Of A Kind. “With the EP we were making songs as a way to soundtrack our own lives, but now it’s a different beast - it’s no longer theoretical, which gives everything more weight,” says Turner. But in the end, the band discovered an essential touchstone in the connection they’ve forged with their fans over the last two years. “Not too long ago, a woman came up to us at a show and told us she was getting a tattoo of one of our lyrics to remind herself to keep pushing on and keep chasing her dreams,” Fuller says. “Moments like that always remind us that as long as we keep making what feels good, chances are it’s going to make other people feel good too. I hope this album feels like a great big party to everyone, and I hope it inspires them to live their lives however they want.” When talking about Barfield, the Tyrant, everything starts with Barfield, the man. Mike Barfield, the southern gentleman of Texas soul, is one of the most exciting front men on any scene today. Sixty four years old and straight out of a long tradition of gulf coast entertainers, Barfield is a must see live show. Imagine James Brown meets Johnny Cash fronting a very Texan version of the Clash.
Who's playing
The Heavy Heavy are a duo from Brighton, England, led by Will Turner. They broke out with the EP Life and Life Only and the radio singles "Miles and Miles" and "Go Down River." Critics have compared them to The Band and Jefferson Airplane, and their debut album is One Of A Kind. Barfield, the Tyrant of Texas Funk, is Mike Barfield, a Gulf Coast-rooted showman fronting a band of Austin country, blues and soul players. The pitch is James Brown meets Johnny Cash by way of the Clash.
What to expect
This is a late-night, standing-room-style club show with two sets. The Heavy Heavy play first, and Barfield closes out the night after midnight. The club's schedule bills the Heavy Heavy set as "The Heavy Heavy & Friends Get Stoned: A Tribute To The Rolling Stones." Turner has said the Stones are the bottom of everything they do. Expect a loose, loud room with the 1950s murals still on the walls.
Why go
The Continental Club opened in 1955 and has hosted Stevie Ray Vaughan, Link Wray and Robert Plant. Barfield counts it as home. A rising band playing Stones songs there, followed by one of the club's own regulars, is a good way to hear the room at its best. It suits anyone who likes their rock and soul with some grit.
