Who's playing
Speer is an Austin-based piano virtuoso whose singing draws on Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, with some of the swing of Michael Bublé and John Legend. His repertoire runs from classic jazz standards to R&B and modern material. He has shared stages with Austin names like Christopher Cross and Bob Schneider and has opened for Van Morrison and Tower of Power.
What to expect
A set built around keyboard and voice, moving between jazz standards, R&B and contemporary songs. The Gallery opened in 2008 and holds about 40 people. It started as a steakhouse and later became a guitar shop. It is a hidden, no-frills lounge, and the stage is only a few steps from the audience.
Why go
The Gallery is often compared to a house concert in a living room, and a pianist who sings suits that setting. You get to hear Speer's playing and voice without the distance of a big club. It also gives you a reason to climb the stairs above one of South Congress's best-known music rooms.
