What to expect
The evening starts with table games, vendors, door prizes and the trunk-or-treat. The haunted house and concession stand open a half hour later. The costume contest comes last, with prizes for first through third place in four age groups: 0 to 3, 4 to 6, 7 to 9 and 10 to 12. Games, concessions and the haunted house run on tickets, and the event is cash only.
Why go
This is a neighborhood Halloween run by city parks staff, set in a park and a rec center instead of a commercial haunt. The trunk-or-treat is free and the costume contest is just for kids. The haunted house has a local reputation, and walking through a real rec center building is part of the fun. Families with young children get a lot out of a short evening.
