"DISCOVERED" AMERICA: BY ACCIDENT – WHILE LOST. CAMOUFLAGED BY A WOODED NEIGHBORHOOD BEYOND SLAUGHTER AND MANCHACA, WHERE THE ROAD IN LOOKS LIKE THE ROAD OUT, THE VENUE EXISTS AS THE SOUTH POLE OF AUSTIN'S MUSICAL AXIS. LATELY, THE CITY'S LEAST VISIBLE VENUE – GEOGRAPHICALLY SPEAKING – HAS EMERGED AS A HAPPENING SCENE.
Who's playing
Seth James blends blues, soul, Southern rock, R&B and Americana. He is tied to the Austin scene and broke through nationally with his 2009 solo album That Kind of Man. In 2010 he co-founded the roots-rock band The Departed with Cody Canada, then went back to solo work. Delbert McClinton has called him one of the most important vocalists working today.
What to expect
Expect gritty guitar, big soulful vocals and songs that move between Memphis R&B, Texas swing and gospel. Sam's Town Point is a laid-back live music bar with a dance floor, a pool table, a patio and a jukebox. It feels like a neighborhood hangout, and the dance floor suits a blues set.
Why go
Sam's sits in a wooded neighborhood past Slaughter and Manchaca, where the road in looks like the road out. Penny Grossman's family has run it since 1981, and a community of artists has since turned the property into a homey event space. It still feels like old Austin, and Seth James fits that kind of room.
