Who's playing

The roster runs from Impressionism to Cubism. It includes Monet's La Seine à Argenteuil, Pissarro's La ferme du friche à Osny, Gauguin's Au-dessus de la mer and Bonnard's Mimosas. Fernand Léger and two Picassos represent Cubism, alongside Kandinsky, Redon, Fantin-Latour and Ludwig Meidner. The paintings come from Julian and Josie Robertson. Josie was a UT Austin fine arts graduate, and the show honors her.

What to expect

This is a focused gallery presentation, not a sprawling blockbuster. Fourteen paintings are arranged to trace how artists moved from loose brushwork and light to flattened color and fractured form. The Blanton sits on the UT campus, and its grounds have shaded patios and large-scale art. Admission also covers the rest of the galleries and Ellsworth Kelly's building, Austin.

Why go

The loan runs three years, so there is time to come back and look again. That suits paintings you may want to see more than once. The Blanton also offers public gallery tours of its modern collection that include this installation. For Monet and Picasso in person, this is the place in Central Texas.
