About this event
While Wandering through Mexico City, includes photographs from 3 different series: Mientras vagaba for el D.F, El subconsciente chilango y La ciudad es un museo. The work approaches the city of Mexico as a site of visual observation documenting how ordinary objects or situations contribute to the identity of the city, and how I engage with the urban environment. Opening date: September 24th, 5PM to 7PM Regular dates: September 24, 2026 to January 4. 2027, Monday to Friday 8 AM to 5PM
Who's playing
Faustinus Deraet was born in Antwerp, grew up in Mexico City and has lived in Austin for more than two decades. He is known for work shot on Holga plastic toy cameras, and the show draws on his book Mientras vagaba por el D.F. His photographs are in the Wittliff Collections and the Mexic-Arte Museum. Gabriela Gamez curated this exhibition.
What to expect
Three bodies of work hang together: Mientras vagaba por el D.F., El subconsciente chilango and La ciudad es un museo. The photographs look at ordinary objects and passing moments, such as street paintings, a metro station and a framed Our Lady of Guadalupe. Some prints are older gelatin silver and others are digital. It is a walk-through gallery show, with a nostalgic, personal tone.
Why go
The work comes from someone who left Mexico City and keeps returning to it with a camera. That gives the images warmth and humor beyond the usual postcard views. The consulate's gallery is also a less obvious place to see art in Austin, with a regular program of Mexican artists.
