About this event
Enter the world of THE EGG: A place immiserated and delighted by dark magic and even darker technology. A place where three social misfits, each carrying bizarre, intimate secrets, must navigate love and friendship under a rigid surveillance state. THE EGG is about art in an age of algorithms, connection in a culture of isolation, and the sirens' call of digital immortality. THE EGG is a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience featuring freakish birdpeople, illegal surgery, and out-of-control technology. From The Zahir Productions. Written by Noah Masterson. Directed by David Ritch.
Who's playing
The Zahir Productions is an Austin nonprofit theater company that makes new, daring work meant to pull people out of isolation and into conversation. Playwright Noah Masterson is also a musician and juggler. Director David Ritch previously staged The Yolk, a condensed version of this play, for Frontera Fest. A cast of Austin performers plays Raymond, Mavis, Chuy, Agnes and the rest.
What to expect
The story follows Mavis, an egg-laying art historian, Raymond, a feather-faced hacker, and Chuy, a mute street artist. Their lives collide when a CEO obsessed with immortality releases a new technology. The tone is absurdist and darkly funny, with some sadness and menace. It runs about 100 minutes with one intermission.
Why go
This is a brand-new play, seen first in Austin. It takes on artificial intelligence, digital immortality and the role of art in daily life, and it does so with birdpeople and dolls. The Rosette is a small neon-signed theater in the Baker Center in Hyde Park, so the show plays up close.
