About this event

"Eli Menezes is a Brazilian multi-instrumentalist, arranger, and producer based in Austin, Texas, via New York City. Since relocating from Rio de Janeiro to NYC in the spring of 2000, he has traveled to over 50 countries and collaborated with a wide range of internationally recognized artists across multiple genres, including Lauryn Hill, Richard Bona, Rita Ora, Faith Evans, Common, Ashanti, Estelle, Thalia, Fred Hammond, and David Bisbal, among many others. Besides having his own solo project, Eli is a member of the soul-pop duo Gritty Sunset and the band FORQ, signed to Snarky Puppy’s GroundUP Music label. He is currently active in the Austin recording and live music scene, where he frequently performs and collaborates with artists such as David Grissom, Andrea Magee, JoJames, The Kill Tony Band, Aubrey Logan and Gina Chavez to name a few." "LoFi Black Tie sounds like you the places I've lived. It has sounds and influences from Brazil, New York and Texas plus its supported by some of the best musicians in the world"

Who's playing

Menezes is a guitarist, bassist, arranger and producer who moved from Rio de Janeiro to New York in 2000 and now lives in Austin. He has worked with Lauryn Hill, Richard Bona, Common and Rita Ora. He is also in the soul-pop duo Gritty Sunset and the band FORQ, on Snarky Puppy's GroundUP Music label. In Austin he plays and records with David Grissom, Gina Chavez, Andrea Magee and Aubrey Logan, among others.

What to expect

This is a release show for an album that blends Brazilian rhythm, jazz harmony, NYC soul and rootsy Austin guitar. Menezes describes the sound as dressed up and unpolished at once. He played nearly all the guitar and bass himself, and guests on the record include Grissom and Snarky Puppy percussionist Keita Ogawa. He has said he will play with his live band and a few surprise guests. The 04 Center is a South Lamar listening room with a full bar.

Why go

An album release is the first chance to hear a record played live by the people behind it. This one is Menezes's first solo project, after decades as a sideman and collaborator. The 04 Center is a good room for it, since the church-turned-music-hall setting puts the focus on the playing. It is also a chance to see a well-connected Austin player step out front.
