About this event

For anyone who plans to grow older. The Kicking the Bucket Listening Club returns to Austin Public Library this fall with a one-of-a-kind community experience at the Yarborough Branch - an 8-week series pairing storytelling, optional basket weaving, and conversation about the questions we'll all face someday. It's a book club for your ears. Each Thursday evening, attendees gather to listen together to a chapter of *Kicking the Bucket* - an audio dramedy following Dolores and Howard, two ride-or-die octogenarians determined to exit life on their own terms before their kids can say "nursing home." Bring a craft or try your hand at basket weaving with artist Melissa Knight, then join Occupational Therapists and Certified End-of-Life Doulas Michelle McCarty and Melissa Saffron of ReInventing Independence for a guided conversation inspired by the story. Together, we'll explore caregiving, medical decision-making, memory loss, independence, legacy, planning ahead, and what it means to live according to our values. Funny, heartfelt, and surprisingly relevant, *Kicking the Bucket* opens the door to conversations most of us would rather avoid - and makes them a little easier to have together. Designed as a full-series experience, but drop-ins are always welcome - we'll catch you up. Come to one, a few, or all eight. Free and open to the public. Who's playing

The story is Kicking the Bucket, an audio dramedy created by Andee Kinzy. It follows Dolores and Howard, two octogenarians who want to leave life on their own terms before anyone says "nursing home." Basket weaving is led by artist Melissa Knight. The conversation is guided by Michelle McCarty and Melissa Saffron of ReInventing Independence, who are occupational therapists and certified end-of-life doulas.

What to expect

Think of it as a book club for your ears. The evening starts with optional basket weaving or a craft you bring yourself. The group then listens to a chapter together and moves into a guided conversation. Topics include caregiving, medical decision-making, memory loss, independence, legacy and planning ahead. The series is built to be followed start to finish, but drop-ins are welcome and the group will catch you up.

Why go

These are conversations many people put off, and this series makes them easier by starting with a story. You can come to one session, a few or all eight. The program is produced by ImprovEd Arts with support from an Austin Arts, Culture, Music and Entertainment Elevate Grant. It runs in a neighborhood library branch in Midtown Austin, which keeps the mood approachable.
