About this event
Who's playing
The workshop is part of Urban Echo, a print and online newspaper and arts project from Fisterra, led by Denver Gonzales. Gonzales was chronically unhoused in Austin for years and now directs Fisterra's Draw Together events, which bring art-making to homeless encampments. The workshop is for artists who are unhoused or who work on the street, and the City of Austin's Cultural Arts Division partly supports it.
What to expect
Artists gather twice a week to share supplies, swap techniques and plan collaborative exhibitions. Mentorship and mutual support are built in, and materials are provided. All skill levels are welcome. The studio moves, so the setting changes from week to week, and the organizers can say where it will be next. Sessions build toward curated public exhibitions of the work.
Why go
This is a chance to see Austin's street artists on their own terms, in a project they help shape. Fisterra describes its approach as art as solidarity, not charity. The workshop suits anyone who wants to make art alongside neighbors or take part in a community-run creative space.
