About this event
'shapeshifting' is the first solo exhibition by Austin-based painter Via Boley, and an entirely new body of work. Working in cut and sanded metal, ink glazes, and thin layers of acrylic, Boley builds each piece toward a single point where something has to give, and something new takes its place. Many of the works sit on reflective metallic surfaces that stand in for a mirror. Look for a clean reflection and you find it broken apart instead: Cubist-inspired forms colliding and warping across the surface, a fractured image in place of a whole one. This is work about tension and change, and the many states a self can hold at once. "I have been thinking a lot about gaining strength through tension," Boley says. "To experience tension is to change." Rather than resolve that instability, the paintings hold it, soft edges and sharp protective spikes, dark passages and bright ones, in the same piece. It is this refusal to settle into one version, one image, one fixed self, that gives the show its name. Exhibition Events (all free and open to the public): - Opening Reception - Thursday, September 10, 5 to 8 PM - Morning Coffee and Artist Meet and Greet - September 19, 10 AM to 12 PM - Happy Hour with Live Painting - October 1, 6 to 8 PM - Artist Talk with Via Boley - October 24, 3 to 5 PM
Who's playing
Via Boley was born in Boston and holds a painting BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She now works from a studio at Splinter Group Studios in Austin. Her work was in the show that opened the gallery's downtown space, and this solo exhibition builds on it. Her paintings draw on a body that shifts between states, and on the idea of gaining strength through tension.
What to expect
Paintings on wood panel, built from cut and sanded metal, ink and thin layers of acrylic. Cubist-inspired forms collide and warp across mirror-like surfaces. Soft edges, sharp protective spikes, dark passages and bright ones share the same piece. The gallery is in a 1926 Beaux-Arts building in Austin's historic district, a cozy space that is easy to take in at your own pace. The run includes an opening reception, a morning coffee meet and greet, a happy hour with live painting and an artist talk.
Why go
This is a first solo show, so you see an Austin artist at an early and ambitious point. The events around it give you ways to hear from Boley directly, which suits work this personal. Unchained.Art was founded in Zurich and moved to Austin in 2022. It aims to keep contemporary art approachable, and a visit here reflects that.
