About this event
The Tender Things @10:00pm, Trainwreck Express @11:45pm – $12 cover. Doors open @9pm. 21+ only. Trainwreck Express rides the rails of a genre all their own: Funky Tonk. A full-throttle collision of soul, funk and country barreling out of control. Born on the platform, raised in the rail yard, baptized in the caboose waiting for the wrong train. Matt Hubbard, head Pullman on keys, vocals, trombone, and train whistle. Punching tickets in the observation deck, Russell Lee (drums/vocals) and Bobby Perkins (bass). Keeping cool in the reefer, Scrappy Jud Newcomb and Andrew Trube play a little front-porch truth. Their debut album, “Is This Seat Taken? (Live at the Depot)” - Recorded live with no frills, no overdubs, just pure, high-octane chaos. Trainwreck Express doing what they do best, all gas, no brakes, and a guaranteed good time till the next stop. All aboard! The Tender Things are an Austin, Texas ‘headneck’ country rock band that are sympathetic to the history of the kind of country groovers that the Texas capitol has known through the decades. Jesse Ebaugh formed the band in 2018 after leaving the Heartless Bastards, and has been following in the tradition of the Texas ‘Outlaw’ country artists, trying to find a unique voice that cuts against the grain of Texas country music.
Who's playing
The Tender Things are an Austin country rock band formed in 2018 by Jesse Ebaugh after he left the Heartless Bastards. They work in the Texas Outlaw tradition while looking for a voice of their own. Trainwreck Express is a five-piece led by Matt Hubbard on keys, vocals, trombone and train whistle. Russell Lee, Bobby Perkins, Jud Newcomb and Andrew Trube complete the band. Their debut album, "Is This Seat Taken? (Live at the Depot)," was recorded live with no overdubs.
What to expect
Two sets, with The Tender Things first and Trainwreck Express closing the night. Expect a loud, danceable finish, since the headliners describe their sound as a runaway collision of soul, funk and country. C-Boy's is a red-velvet juke joint with a heart-shaped neon light behind the bar. Live music plays there seven nights a week. Upstairs is the Jade Room, a quieter cocktail lounge styled after 1950s Japanese GI bars.
Why go
This pairing puts two kinds of Texas country-adjacent music on one stage, one rooted in outlaw tradition and one that mixes in soul and funk. C-Boy's was opened by the owner of the Continental Club as a tribute to Rome Inn manager C-Boy Parks. It is a good room for an Austin late night, with a patio and shuffleboard when you need a break from the stage.
