Parks Across Austin
About this event
Austin families can celebrate fall with a little fresh air and a lot of community spirit during the Roots & Wings Festival, happening throughout the city from October 17 to November 1. This citywide celebration invites everyone to get outside and connect with nature through free, family-friendly events in parks, gardens, and green spaces all across town. Coordinated by the City of Austin’s Climate Action & Resiliency Urban Forestry Team, the festival features public events hosted by local community groups, neighborhoods and libraries who share a love for Austin’s outdoor spaces. 25 schools will also take part in things like nature crafts, butterfly tagging, tree climbing, planting parties, and guided garden tours, or simply exploring local parks and enjoy time together outside. You’ll find something for every age, from hands-on art projects and storytimes to volunteer days and family birding walks. All events are free! Check the full schedule at rootsandwingsfest.com/pages/2026
Who's playing
The City of Austin's Climate Action and Resilience office, through its Urban Forestry team, coordinates the festival. The events themselves come from community groups, neighborhood associations, libraries and about 25 schools. Past hosts include community gardens, friends-of-the-park groups, Travis Audubon and the Zilker Botanical Garden. It began in 2018 as a single-day gathering and has grown into a citywide tradition.
What to expect
This is a festival of many small events, not one big site. Expect guided nature walks, family birding walks, pollinator programs, tree plantings and planting parties, and garden tours. Kids can try nature crafts, butterfly tagging and tree climbing, and some stops add storytimes, volunteer days, live music or art projects. Each host sets its own pace, and the festival's event finder lets you search by neighborhood, date and activity.
Why go
The festival lets you see a neighborhood park or community garden you might never have visited, with people who care about it. It suits families with kids of any age. Austin sits on the monarch migration route and is a longtime Tree City USA, and many events tie back to that. You can pick one close to home or string several together across the fortnight.
