Sarofim Music Series: Dr. Benjamin Whitcomb, Cellist
Thursday, October 29 at The Alma Thomas Theater, Austin
The Alma Thomas Theater · Georgetown
About this event
Experience the expressive versatility of the cello with acclaimed cellist Dr. Benjamin Whitcomb. This dynamic recital moves from the virtuosic intensity of Max Reger’s Suite for Solo Cello to the vivid, atmospheric miniatures of Robert Muczynski’s Gallery, culminating in Richard Strauss’s sweeping Sonata for Cello and Piano, performed with SU faculty pianist, Dr. Jeanne Hourez. An accomplished recitalist, chamber musician, and author, Whitcomb brings his artistry and insight to a program that highlights the remarkable range of the cello - from intimate and introspective to bold and brilliant.
Who's playing
Whitcomb is described as an acclaimed recitalist, chamber musician and author. He is joined by Dr. Jeanne Hourez, a French-born pianist who teaches piano and chamber music at Southwestern. Hourez earned her doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin. She also plays with the Austin-based SoundMap Ensemble and researches women composers of the Belle Époque.
What to expect
The program is built to show the cello's range. It opens with the intensity of Max Reger's Suite for Solo Cello and moves to Robert Muczynski's Gallery, a set of vivid, atmospheric miniatures. It ends with Richard Strauss's sweeping Sonata for Cello and Piano. The Alma Thomas Theater seats 720 and has an acoustic shell, so the instrument should sound clear and warm.
Why go
One recital takes in solo cello, short character pieces and a big Romantic duo sonata. The Sarofim Music Series is Southwestern's concert season, and the Alma Thomas Fine Arts Center has been its home since 1956. For classical listeners in Austin, it is a reason to head to Georgetown's campus.
