About this event
The Plan II Honors Program presents the annual Liz Carpenter Lecture at LBJ Auditorium, featuring Eddie S. Glaude, author of America, U.S.A. The Fall 2026 Liz Carpenter Lecture features best-selling author, distinguished scholar, and public intellectual Eddie S. Glaude. He will discuss his most recent book, America, U.S.A.: How Race Shadows the Nation's Anniversaries, which analyzes the historical contexts of myriad milestone American anniversary celebrations to frame and illuminate our current historical moment at 250. A conversation with distinguished UT professor and founding director of the LBJ School's Center for the Study of Race and Democracy, Peniel Joseph, will follow the lecture. The event will begin promptly at 6PM in the LBJ Auditorium on 2313 Red River Street. Doors will open 15-20 minutes beforehand. Complimentary parking is available in Lot 40 (Red River & Dean Keeton). There are limited spaces in Lot 40; if full, you may park in Manor Garage nearby, which is a paid lot.
Who's playing
Eddie S. Glaude is a best-selling author, scholar and public intellectual. His latest book, America, U.S.A., looks at the history behind milestone American anniversary celebrations and uses it to frame the country's 250th. Peniel Joseph is a UT professor and the founding director of the LBJ School's Center for the Study of Race and Democracy. He leads the conversation that follows.
What to expect
A lecture on the book comes first, then a moderated conversation between the two scholars. The evening is built around one idea: how race shadows the way the nation marks its anniversaries. It sits in the LBJ Auditorium, part of the LBJ Presidential Library complex on the UT campus. A livestream is also planned.
Why go
The lectureship honors Liz Carpenter, Lady Bird Johnson's press secretary and a UT alumna. It is meant to bring outside voices into dialogue with the university and the wider community. Hearing a prominent author in conversation with a UT scholar is a good way to take on the 250th anniversary conversation in Austin.
